Nearly 100 students from the Chicago area came together this September with volunteers from DMI, Inc, to explore, learn about, and ultimately design solutions to food insecurity, food waste, or sustainable nutrition challenges. At the end of the day, students pitched their ideas to a panel of judges for the chance to win funding and support. Thirteen groups walked away with $1000 each to bring their big ideas to life this year.

This fall, SAP once again teamed up with GENYOUth to present  the 2017 SAP Social Innovation Series, powered by AdVenture Capital. Over the course of three days and three cities, 180 students ages 13-17 worked side by side with SAP mentors to design student-led, innovative initiatives to health and wellness issues in their schools and communities.  At the end of each event, students pitched their ideas to a panel of judges, and 30 winners received $1000 each to bring their idea to life.

We caught up with Abby E., a 12th grader from Indiana, and this year's $10,000 recipient for the SAP Bill McDermott Scholarship. In partnership with SAP, The SAP Bill McDermott Scholarship is offered to students in GENYOUth programs each year to provide funding for postsecondary education. As part of her scholarship application, Abby shared how she overcame personal adversity when a close family member developed a disability that removed her ability to hear. Abby taught herself adaptive sign language to communicate and now helps to interpret at activities.
